Future Legislation Our nation has suffered too much at the hands of dangerous people who use guns to commit acts of violence. I’m not one to think that we can stop every violent act, but if there is anything that we can be done to prevent any of these events we must try, but within reason. Most gun owners are responsible and law-abiding, and they use their guns safely. While no law or set of laws will end gun violence, it is clear that the American people want action, but that action can’t be to arm the masses.…

Americans love guns and Americans hate guns. There is a perplexing relationship within the American people and their desire for guns. American citizens are aware of the danger that follows with gun use, but still advocate to keep them legal within the states. The gruesome massacres that have occurred within American schools such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, as well as the massacre that recently occurred in Orlando, Florida at club Pulse, somehow do not resonate with the fact that this country has a very serious gun problem. The United States must figure out logical ways to make access to guns harder such as disallowing someone who has been on a FBI watch list from ever purchasing weapons.…

Why? In this nation, where nearly half of all US households own at least one gun, nearly 30,000 people die from a gunshot each year. “A Dec. 10, 2014 Pew Research Center survey found 52% of Americans believe the right to own guns should be protected while 46% believe gun ownership should be controlled, a switch from 1993 when 34% wanted gun rights protected and 57% wanted gun ownership controlled. According to a Feb. 20, 2018 Quinnipiac Poll taken shortly after the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, 66% of American voters support stricter gun control laws (Background of the Issue - Gun Control” ). As more gun violence incidents are occuring, the more the debate is pushed into…

Public shootings or mass public killings have been an epidemic that our society as a whole has had to deal with since the beginning of time. Throughout all these events one thing has often been the same, they had planned it beforehand before they executed the deed. People seem to think that banning guns will in turn solve the conflict that we face currently but that is a very ill conceived notion. The solution to this problem is to enforce stronger gun laws and regulations. For example they should put a limit on purchasing guns without a background check to look for any mental instability and a gun ownership license.…

On October 1 2015, seventeen students at Umpqua Community College in Oregon became victims in a heart wrenching and growing epidemic: gun violence in America (OR Live). In the three years since the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, 972 mass shootings have taken place and more than 82,000 Americans lost their lives at the hands of gun violence but little to no action has been taken to curtail the rise of gun violence in the United States (Lopez 2015). While the problem of gun violence in America is complex, the solution is simple. With the overwhelming increase in militarized police forces, it seems the only way to influence change effectively is to to resist change non-violently. When Martin Luther King stood up to the previously decided social hierarchy, he was able to awake an entire nation and it took years for the government to silence his cause. Malcolm X, another Civil Rights leader, fell victim to FBI CointelPro and it was due to the fact that he was able to affect change in a country where the government had previously decided the outcome. Thomas Jefferson once said, "If you want something that you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done". On June 17 2015, Dylan Roof a 21-year old male who opened fire at a historical black church in Charleston, SC. Roof, used a Glock 41 .45 -caliber handgun to killed nine people in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. (Brown et al) Roof was able to obtain a handgun even though he had prior drug charges because of a failed background check done by the gun store. This sort of thing is quite common as background checks are only done within a three day waiting period and when the time is up, the person is allowed to buy the gun without any proper evaluation on their history or condition. We as a nation are progressing in terms of technology, education and many other things, but are failing when it comes to protecting ourselves from domestic terrorism.…
