Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Sandy Hook, Charleston, Oregon, Savannah, and San Bernardino all have one thing in common. They are all connected by the fact that mass shooting has occurred in their area. They are now on a long list of places that are traumatized and fearful of the future. These cities will always be defined as that place that has had a mass shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has not defined the criteria of a mass shooting but others have defined it as “all shooting incidents in which four or more people are killed or injured by gunfire” (Washington Post). This theory “refers to an individual's belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments” (Bandura). This rings true in these cases because someone who may be angry or mentally unstable can watch the news of past shootings that have occurred. He or she then sees how the person during Sandy Hook was angry about a situation that relates to his or her life and he or she feels compelled to do the same in his or her town. For people in a stable capacity would see this example as extreme but when it comes to people who are not in control of their own thoughts, nothing is really extreme. Self efficacy along with the idea of “copycats” do not seem too severe because every human being on a daily basis is learning something whether it might be from news outlets, social media, or even from another person. What a person learns is determinant of other people. Whether we like it or not “humans, compared to the other species, are far more likely to rely on other individuals expertise and knowledge when learning how to solve problems or acquire new skills” (academia). For example, using social media, thinking critically, and even expressing our emotions such as anger are all taught by others. There are a lot of missing pieces in recordings on mass shootings due to poor communication between local law enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Between the 2006 and 2011, there have been 172 mass killings, which are factored as 1% of the number of murders (USA today). Due to all the commotion that has been caused this year by the four worlds known mass shootings, it would be thought that the numbers are higher. According to many different media sources, there has said to been more shootings in the year 2015 then the number of days that have gone by in this calendar year. The idea that there has been that many mass shootings in this year alone is catastrophic. It may seem that there has not been that high of a number but many are not making world news. Since four or more people determine mass shootings, if four people are murdered the media will not display those
