Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the two adolescents that committed this heinous crime. Over all, these murders had caused thirteen deaths and twenty one, brutal injuries. Although, most of the deaths and injuries were by gunshot, many explosives were also used. The explosive were manufactured by Klebold and there were roughly ninety nine of these devices planted throughout the campus.…
In some schools across America, the mass murder of Native Americans in California during the nineteenth century is taught as an inevitable, necessary evil (Discussion). However, this notion is false. The mass murder of the Native Americans was systematic and calculated, carried out by white settlers through attacks on the lives, livelihoods, homes, and cultures of the natives. According to both Raphael Lemkin and the United Nations, these actions were genocidal. In the work, Murder State, by Brendan Lindsay, Lindsay, using the definitions created by Lemkin and the United Nations, effectively categorizes this mass extermination of the Native Americans in California as a genocide.…

The Death Penalty. Since the first civilizations Executions have always been a method of punishment for crimes. In some cases the crimes may have been a little ridiculous for being considered crimes, but that never stopped the swing of the ax or whatever type of “death penalty” it was. Back in medieval times a man could have been executed for anything from stealing a horse to stealing an apple from a market stall.…
The crisis of mass incarceration is not felt evenly in the United States, race defines every aspect of the criminal justice system, from police targeting, to crimes charged, and rates of conviction. More Black men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began. Prison labor has its roots in slavery. After the 1861-1865 Civil War, a system of hiring out prisoners was introduced in order to continue the slavery tradition.…
One of the most impressive situations that I found the United States is the one regarding the massive incarceration of the African American population. Because of this, I decided to do some research to understand the origins of this situation and its consequences for the African American communities. As I acknowledge the fact that racism has operated as a systemic concept that has affected the life trajectories of the ethnic minorities, and specifically, the African Americans, this situation and its evolution surprised me and attracted my attention.…
Tyra Thomas Professor Holder December 6, 2016 African Studies Mass Incarceration Many believe that slavery didn’t end in 1865, rather it was reformed. We can look at slavery and how African labor was exploited and the harsh conditions they were under to perform this labor for the white men. After the exploitation of Africans in Slavery there was Segregation, which existed solely to separate races due to nothing more than the color of your skin. Race something that is social constructed and has nothing to back it up, but society has instilled this thought as one being superior due to skin color.…
INTRODUCTION Traditionally the actions and behavior of individuals that fall under the category of serial killer has been derived from factors such as an immoral upbringing or even past physical, sexual or mental abuse from their early childhood experiences. Serial murder is a term that describes an individual that has committed over four murders in a relatively short time frame. Serial murder has plagued the criminal justice system with a number of the worst offenders in human history. These offenders have exposed the disgusting capabilities of evil actions and dehumanizing violence.…
Mass Incarceration Mass incarceration is very unique problem to the United States that has been around for several years and seems to continue to grow by the years. In the book Mass Incarceration on Trial it is stated that, “The term mass incarceration was first used by specialists in the field of punishment and society to describe the tremendous changes in the scale of incarceration that began in the late 1970s…” (Simon 3). The fact that this term has been getting attention for almost forty six years comes to show how urgently this issue needs to be addressed. Mass incarceration is not only negatively impacting the prisoner himself, the prisoner’s family, but society as well.…
The article explained the three main ideas such as how killers develop, how they act, and ways killers kill. Simon describes that killers become who they are because of mental illnesses or because of the environment they grew up in. According to the author, serial killers could have grown up in an abusive home, been isolated as a child, or bullied in school. The killer could also have an illness and psychopathy or sociopathy…
Sociology is the study of human behavior by looking at external influences that have happen to shaped an individual. Using a sociological perspective such as functionalism, conflict theory, helps to answer questions after a mass shooting. Such as why and what would drive someone to commit a mass shooting. Let’s start with the definition of a mass shooting as the murder of four or more victims in a signal episode (Mass Shooting in America). There are four types of perspectives that can help explain a mass shooting such as functionalism, feminism theory, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction.…
Elizabeth Williams Ms. Blair English 4 2 April 2015 What causes serial killers to become what they are: Nature or nurture? There are many speculations of what makes a person do and be the things they are but it is not only nature or nurture it’s a combination of both. For a long time people have wondered what makes people act the way they do. People especially wonder about the people of the outcast of the society, the killers. People are fascinated of how these people can do the things they do.…
Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, and many more have joined a category of African American people, who have been unjustly slain. Although, their murders have been highly publicized, caused uproars and inspired movements such as #blacklivesmatter, the people in this category have received little to no justice. It appears that we are seeing more and more African American lives taken. The fact that most of these murders are at the hands of white police officers or vigilantes calls to question whether the slave master has earned a badge and if he swapped his whip for a gun. These homicides are a modern-day mechanism for social control of African Americans.…
Intellect nor the imagination define a person’s reason for killing, rather the deeper things like socialization and childhood express the reasoning behind the gruesome murders (Ioana). Despite two-sided evidence and common perceptions, the more supported answer to the question is that serial killers are made. People are the most impressionable in their early stages of life. Children tend to mimic the actions of the people they are around (Langdon).…
