The Masque of the Red Death was a very alluring story because of the Prince and how the Red Death played the role as a character. Poe created symbolism well when he wrote Masque of the Red Death. Poe created symbolism as he builds and describes the ideas of the clock, the red death, and the abbey Prince Prospero and the nobility hid in. While the red death was a epidemic, Poe still managed to symbolize the red death in a way that no amount of money can save you. To begin with, Poe uses symbolism by the clock going off every hour. In the first example of symbolism, the clock struck every hour and it made everyone cringe. The clock symbolized the time that everyone had left to live. Strengths of this counterclaim is the language Poe used, and the symbolism of the rooms were not obvious. Weaknesses of the counterclaim is that the clock symbolized the time of death. Another weakness is that the character of the red death symbolized the epidemic that was happening. The guests and nobility is another weakness because no matter how rich you are, you can't escape death.
Lastly, the use of symbolism Poe used is the abbey that Prince Prospero and his nobility hid in. The last example of symbolism is that the abbey symbolized that you can't escape death. The abbey showed that no matter how much you bolt a door you can't lock out the red death. The abbey lastly symbolizes that no matter how rich you are, hiding in an abbey can't save you. The abbey was like a grave that all the nobility locked themselves in because once it hit the Prince, everyone else died after him.
Poe created symbolism well when he wrote “Masque of the Red Death.” In Masque of the Red Death, Poe's use of symbolism made the story suspenseful and gave the readers and insight to the horror that the red death was.
