Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory states that people in the workplace are motivated by set of internal needs, and that such motivational needs can be arranged in a hierarchical manner. Maslow suggested that people has unlimited needs those needs can influence their behaviour. He also mentioned that only unsatisfied needs can influence behaviour and satisfied needs do not act as motivators. Maslow found out that a person’s needs are arranged in order of importance, or hierarchy from the basic such as food and shelter to the complex such as ego and achievement. He also mentioned that people advance to a higher level in the hierarchy only when the lower need is at least minimally satisfied. The managers may motivate their staff by ensuring that the employees have safe working conditions by providing them with protective clothing like acid proof overalls for auto electricians, oil resistant safety shoes and helmets to protect their heads from falling objects. The managers might provide well ventilated working area for their employees and for those working outside they can be provided with a shade. The managers might also offer company benefits in the form flexible benefits housing subsidies, life insurance policies and medical aid plans. The employees will be motivated to stay at an organisation which offers job security so managers might offer their employees job security through workers compensation so that the employees are protected against loss of income. Managers may also offer their employees company vehicles or staff bus so that they can be motivated to come to work in time without hassling with public …show more content…
This is the need for power, achievement and status. Maslow suggested that people need self-esteem and esteem from others. Employees are motivated to work hard to be promoted, earning increased respect, recognition and the appreciation of others. With this recognition employees became satisfied with the organisation. Managers might motivate their staff by appreciating their staff for job well done through programmes like Employee of the Month awards, Long Service certificates. The managers may create prestigious job titles for their employees like Customer Service Advisor for a long serving motor mechanic, Workshop Supervisor for the employee responsible with the staff at the vehicle service bay and Chief Financial Officer for the one responsible with receiving and payments of accounts. This will make the employees to have self esteem and other employees will want to emulate them hence every will be motivated to work hard for the organisation so that they can get recognition and high status at work and the society at large.
