A couple years ago, I did a project for a Gender, Race and Identity class on education and diversity. I interviewed many people of diverse backgrounds on their experiences in high schools, and they all had similar themes. They did not feel that their mostly white teachers understood their backgrounds. They felt disconnected because class-time focused on people of cultures that they did not relate to. Even further, there is a huge population of students with English as their second language who have a language barrier into understanding their teachers and classes.This need of accepting and belonging is essential. This is where a person is able to truly problem solve and think creatively and critically. This is the ideal level for optimal learning in the classroom, but this is not our final goal. We want to light a fire in the minds of our students and create a curiosity for learning. We want them to want to learn. According to Common Core Standards, as teachers, our goal is to get students to be "college and career ready". But there is so much more to it than that. The standards can 't just just be the goal. Our goal needs to be rich, authentic, engaged, learning by meeting the needs of our students. When we have this, the Common Core Standards are met easily through the rest of our learning.
