The journal Reading Men Differently: Alternative Portrayals of Masculinity in Contemporary Young Adult Fiction examines the portrayal of masculinity in contemporary young adult books, it focuses on the discursive construction of masculinity that is offered to young adults through these texts. Its helpful to me as it allows me to comprehend how Jasper Jones is constrained by heteronormative ideas and discourses, it explains masculine theory and the different ways in which we can observe and interpret it. This contributes greatly to my understanding of masculinity and how it is constructed throughout the novel, furthermore it allows me to apply this information to the text of Jasper Jones and consider how masculinity manifests in the values of Corrigan.

It explains that literature is significant in its importance in reaffirming or challenging the cultural ideologies such as gender and masculinity. It argues that repeated representations in texts will eventually become naturalised. Reconstructing Masculinity: Representations of Men and Masculinity in Australian Young Adult Literature also notes in its examples an absence of femininity in novels which reinforces the oppositional relationships between masculinity and femininity which can be seen as misogynistic. This work assists me in evaluating the different masculine discourses in Jasper Jones, it pushes me to contemplate femininity in the novel and how femininity is juxtaposed alongside masculinity in the
