At some point, one side wins because the other side can’t compensate for their losses. In this particular story, war is seen as something that makes you, or tears you apart. When the group of guys thought the mountains were talking, they spent “six trillion dollars” to make the “mountains burn.” They heard things talking, like the trees talking politics and the monkeys talking religion. Putting the bigger picture story aside, I started to think about O’Brien’s view of all these things talking. For the talking trees, I look this as a bunch of people looking exactly the same as they all stand there and talk about the supposed important issues going on in the war. And I saw monkeys that talk about religion as more of a person who was against religion. I thought about monkey business and how people fool around, but in this aspect, O’Brien was saying that the people were fooling around with how they talk about religion. Thinking about this story from more of O’Brien’s views made me question what his real purpose was. I think he wrote this to show how much he doesn’t like the war and violence that happened.
