Does fighting demons automatically make you masculine? This article was very interesting because of pathos, ethos, and logos. Goguen starts off “Masculinity and Supernatural Love” by saying that she thinks Sam and Dean are scared of love, but that love is very prevalent in their relationship. Gorguen states “[W]hy would the hunter/warrior ideal be masculine?” (170). She then goes on to explain how there are some women hunters, but that they are the exception to the rule. The show portrays girls as weaker than men, and has to have the men save them throughout the show. In the show the family of hunters are prepared to go to hell for each other, but do not often use the L-word, Love. They often make fun a=of anyone who does show …show more content…
Gorguen states “Clearly, the love is there, but the brothers have serious inhibitions when it comes to expressing it.” (174). “Supernatural is largely about the men navigating their masculinity, but you can’t really talk about masculinity without simultaneously commenting on femininity” she states (Gorguen174). The show often shows that femininity in men is a thing to make fun of, and that all feeling that guys have shown weakness. They often tease each other for acting like women, the brothers are very clear their stance on femininity in men. Gorguen states “While the boys have struggled with whether their protection of one another is helpful or hurtful, the show has remained practically silent on whether those uncertainty extends to the women in their lives” (175). It makes it clear that she has had some sort of higher level education. When she uses more complicated concepts, “Sam and Dean wouldn’t have fir Aristotle’s bill for being virtuous” (Gorguen177). It shows that she is a well-educated person, making comparisons to ancient philosophers shows that she most likely took at least a few history classes.
Gorguen writes this article and misportrays the show a little bit, she overplays the homophobic nature of supernatural and makes is seem as if the brothers hate homosexuals. Gorguen states “[I]n the midst of all this encouragement to chuckle along with Sam and Dean’s homophobia” (176). The homophobia of this show is overplayed in this article, but that does not make the rest of this article obsolete. Gorguen is a very talented writer and the rest of her article is very interesting and
