Introduction
In this investigation task, two mascara brands were compared to see which mascara brand was of higher quality overall. Questions considered in this investigation include how long good quality mascara lasts, and when the most appropriate time to apply mascara was. Mascara is measured by the average thickness in millimetres and this model is then considered over a number of hours.
Aim
To determine which mascara brand is more efficient over time.
Hypothesis
The Fuller Mascara brand is hypothesised to be the more efficient mascara brand.
Mathematical Content
The first brand tested was AMI Mascara. Its thickness over four hours after application is equated using the rule:
Thickness = (-(〖hours)〗^2)/20+1
The second …show more content…
However, after 30 minutes, the AMI Mascara almost maintains its original thickness, producing a thickness of 0.9875 mm. On the other hand, the Fuller Mascara produces a thickness of 0.8913 mm, which means there is a difference of 0.0962 mm between the thicknesses of each mascara. At 1 hour, the difference in thickness is 0.1557 mm, and this gap continues to increase. The AMI Mascara continues to be thicker than the Fuller Mascara until approximately at the 3.3 hour period where the Fuller Mascara produces a thicker application. Therefore, although the Fuller Mascara wears out more initially, it appears to be a more efficient mascara over time. The AMI Mascara is preferable before the 3.3 hour period. Nevertheless, over the first four hours, the AMI Mascara produces an overall better thickness; however, the Fuller Mascara appears to be a better mascara over time.
Reapplying the Mascara
After four hours the mascara is reapplied without removing the amount that remains at the end of the first four hours.
The next thickness rule for the AMI Mascara is:
Thickness = (-(〖hours-4)〗^2)/20+1.2 for 4≤hours<8.
Record the mascara thickness over the 16 hours in a table. Graph the thickness against time for the first 16 hours on a clearly labelled
