After reading The Crucible and learning about each character I learning very quickly that Author Miller believes fear is not something that should be deal with lightly because fear is something that can take over your whole life. Miller showed this the best through the character Mary Warren, Mary Warren was the servant of Proctors and was fearful. Mary was not a very flashily or main character to the play but she did have a very important role in the play she taught all of us what fear does to a person, Marry Warren was in the group of girls what was in the woods playing with witchcraft but she was the only one that did not participate in the activates “I never done none of it, Abby. Mr. Proctor then questioned how she knew, but accepted it and told her that if she confessed her saintliness would go too and they would both be at fault. He then told Mary she had to go to the court because all his cards were on the table. Mary was still filled with fear and told Proctor that the girls would turn against her “I cannot do it, I cannot!” (Act 2, page 80) this one out of two great speeches Mary made in the play to show her fear took over her life. Mary would rather live in hiding and keep everything that Abagail had done in the dark rather than going to the court and confession to help the innocent people that Abagail keeps accusing of witchcraft. Mary at this part of the play was portraited as a push-over and wasn’t willing to put up a fight. After a lot of going back and forth with Proctor Mary was went to the court to confess what has happened Mary went into the court telling Danforth that all the girl were pretending the whole time and none of them saw the devil but Danforth didn’t want to believe what Mary was telling him because he didn’t what to be portrait as someone that’s not in charge of this situation or that doesn’t know what he was doing. Danforth kept asking Mary has Proctor make her say this
