Mary Under The Cross Analysis

Although this thesis is still being revised, it states: Dario Fo had political and social triggers that led him down the path to creating a more modern—and revolutionary—giullare storytelling style that is comprehensible to masses around the world. I chose my focus(es) for multiple reasons. The first is that I need to understand why he revised biblical stories and, specifically, “Mary Under the Cross”. I believe if I understand why he chose it politically and socially, I can connect to it as well and create a better final product. Additionally, it is essential that I comprehend how it was revised by Fo and—hopefully—it will be helpful to my work on the scene. The first category I’m going to research will have to do with Dario Fo and his connection …show more content…
As someone who is not religious, I am only somewhat familiar with the story; however, I think it is vital to be able to compare and contrast the Biblical version and Dario Fo’s version. This obviously means that I will use the Mistero Buffo script and introductory material provided. This is important to my process of working on “Mary Under the Cross” because I need to be able to analyze it thoroughly and then—as an outline—make every move, character, and emotion specific. Because I will be speaking in Gramellot, it is vital that the audience understand every move that I make in order to understand the …show more content…
The Bible and Mistero Buffo will be helpful in comprehending the similarities and differences between the texts. Moreover, I will grasp the desperation of Mary more. The next source I will use includes lots of the information I need for my questions and research topics stated above: Dario Fo: Revolutionary Theatre. This source includes information on the political and social bones of the guillari. It defines who the guillari is and what they performed, as well. Another aspect it includes is Fo’s own political views and ow he wanted his performance to be for the working class audience. The book further delves into the definition and the use of grammelot. Finally, it provides the Vatican’s response to Mistero Buffo and the writing and performance of the stories. Brenner-Idan’s work, meanwhile, provides some of Mary’s background and dealing with being a “Hero’s Mother”. In dealing with that, I’m sure it’s a lot of pressure on Mary and I must understand that as I create her character. Next, Scuderi’s works provide information on framing the piece to achieve metacommunication across language and cultural barriers and talks a bit about the epic theatre material that Fo was creating. In the next chapter, it gives details on Antonio Gramsei and his politics, an inspiration for Fo. Moreover, it gives me information about why Fo chose to support and represent the working

In Helena Maria Viramontes’ Under the Feet of Jesus, she uses selection of detail, figurative language and tone in order to describe how Estrella’s character develops over time, and through learning new things. The author uses selection of detail in order to describe Estrella’s development as a character. How she does so is by first stating that she “hated when things were kept from her.” She clearly does not like things that she cannot understand, she feels hatred towards the tool box because she does not understand or know what the tools in there are called or what they’re used for, “the funny shaped objects, seemed as confusing and foreign as the alphabet she could not decipher.”…

The dynamic contrast between embodiments of judgement and those of forgiveness is threaded throughout the Abrahamic beliefs of the Middle East, particularly in the Roman Catholic faith of Mexico, wherein particular note is placed upon not only Jesus as a forgiving figure in opposition of the Judeo-Christian God, but the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe as well. Rudolfo Anaya addresses his own struggles with this conflict of faith through the semi-autobiographical protagonist of 7-year-old Antonio “Tony” Márez, a young Catholic boy who explores these issues through Catholic and Pagan belief, and who holds an affinity for the Virgin Mary, in his seminal novel Bless Me, Ultima. Tony struggles between the opposing forces of his Catholic parents, neighbors,…

Jackson’s paper, “ What Mary Didn't Know” , is about a scientist Mary, who learns all the physical facts within the world from inside an isolated black-and-white room through a black and white TV. When she finally leaves the room, she experiences seeing a red tomato for the first time, and learns new phenomenal truths about what it is like to see the color red. The argument being will she learn something from the actual physical experience of seeing red, or is her prior knowledge enough to dismiss this experience. The knowledge argue infers that, contrary to physicalism, the complete physical truth is not the whole truth. Therefore, claiming all the physical facts of a phenomenon, without actually experiencing it is not enough.…

However, many of them do not contain accurate details, which ends up taking away from the historical accuracy by losing sight of the purpose of the Biblical account. This focus allows exactitude in Giotto’s realism. The crowds of this fresco are much smaller than the crowds seen in Duccio’s Crucifixion on the Maestá. Mary faints in a realistic way into the hands of St. John and a holy woman . Dividing the fate of Christ’s cloak again suggests the sin of obsession over worldly goods and wealth, relating to the patronage and function of this chapel. Giotto’s realistic technique is seen in the folds of the cloak, heavy as it hangs down.…

It very much stood out to me that many of the people in Joseph’s village were extremely poor, although the women wore what appeared to be decently expensive clothing. This makes me think that women were held in a higher standard than usual, although they were treated almost like slaves in that location and time period. Also, Joseph, after being very distrusting of Mary’s story of the angel, is easily convinced and gives his all in order to get Mary to Bethlehem. The argument between Joseph, Mary and Zechariah concerning whether or not Mary is telling the truth about the story of the angel is something I am yet to discover in the Biblical text. I believe this was added to the film for simple entertainment as well as clarification for the…

Parables have long been a custom to educate people about pertinent morals. The Gospel of Matthew is constantly informative because it urges “the reader to identify with characters ‘who receive’ Jesus and ‘do’ God’s will” (Achtemeier 662). This claim is evident throughout the Gospel of Matthew and in The Parable of the Ten Virgins, as Matthew would constantly “persuade the reader to emulate their example” (Achtemeier 662). The Parable of the Ten Virgins symbolizes God’s Parousia during the eschaton. Matthew conveys a moral to his readers, indicating that those of the Church who are prepared for Jesus’ second arrival will be saved, and those who are not will suffer.…
