Mary Shelley, this name might not ring a bell in your head. But this title sure can, “Frankenstien”. This thrilling horror story was written by Mary Shelley and because of this story, there has been some other books written as spoofs of the original “Frankenstein”. This author made a classic horror story and she also wrote many other stories of the romantic/gothic culture that lives on to this day. But how was her writing created?

Mary Shelley had an interesting literary life, as her mother was a part of a movement that many stand to today. Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects”, a book written in 1972 where she explains that women deserve an education(A&E Television Networks 1). The reason many people think this, is because Mary Shelley’s husband wrote the introduction on paper(A&E Television Networks 1). This story was actually inspired by her own life very much, so much that Mary Shelley literally dreamed it. Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley were in Switzerland with Jane Clairmont, Lord Byron, and John Polidori. Lord Byron had an idea that everybody should do their best at writing their own horror story and this is where “Frankenstein” was born. Mary Shelley then wrote the initial draft influenced by a nightmare she had experienced(BBC 1). Mary Shelley and her siblings were exposed often to her father’s acquaintances, ranging from the poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which Mary heard recite "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in her living room and scientists like Humphry Davy and her father's friend William Nicholson, who both studied with galvanic electricity in the early years of the nineteenth century. All of these marvelous people soon contributed to inspiration for “Frankenstein”(Romantic Circles 1).
