Mary goes in the house without replying and Scott imprudently follows her in. Immediately he notices the dead body. Right before he can react, he feels lightheaded. A few seconds after, his knees will no longer bear his weight and he collapses. The story comes back on track revealing the flashback. Patrick will begin weeping, crying that he has found a new part of himself. Compassionately, he would exclaim, “I love you! I really do! Maybe it’s because I’m almost always at work, but I love my co-worker, Scott. I’m sorry.”
The scene shifts into the present–the police eating dinner. The ending does not alter other than the flashback, and viewers are left with Mary’s giggles. The purpose of these adjustments is to insure that the readers are thrilled to see this version and encourage others to come see it. They will be excited on how the movie will differ from the narrative. In the short story, the characters are very undeveloped leaving to infer what happens and how their personality might be.
