The women have an enchanting mix of beauty, talent, and vulnerability. Readers will want to be like the women because they are attractive, sexy, and very good at what they do. In the first chapter, Marie investigates a murder. She discovers there were four murders. Each victim worked for the same escort agency that Mary works for. Because of Marie, readers realize that Mary is in more danger than she thinks she is. Marie’s actions make Mary’s life more dynamic and engaging for the reader. And as the novel continues, Mary, Marie, and Maria meet, become friends and help each other.
Each of the women is looking for a family. For different reasons, each of the women does not have the family most of us have. You are familiar with stories with a nuclear or a literal family. You are familiar with stories where a character has a figurative family. Mary, Marie, and Maria is a novel about characters who, at the end of a novel, discover their figurative family.
Their women’s individual stories are fascinating. Each chapter of the novel begins with something dramatic and exciting. Mary, Marie, and Maria participate in three absorbing stories. Each has a beginning, middle, and a climax. And each chapter sets the table for longer dramatic arcs.
The minor characters in the novel are interesting—and the fictional city that is the setting for the novel is another character. And there is an amusing and rakish narrator who drops in occasionally—and yes, the narrator’s voice is accessible and
