What if Mary did not in fact commit this murder? Maybe, what if her hormones from the pregnancy affected her mental state? That is possible, yes, but from my studies say, that may not be quite true. When a woman’s hormones become heightened with a baby on the way, the effects are as follows, increase in emotion, forgetfulness, nausea, increased appetite, and aching. As you can see, none of these symptoms would play a major role in “accidentally” killing Patrick in an uncontrollable mental state. The closest to the reasoning that her mind was indeed affected is her emotions. Her heightened progesterone and estrogen levels would affect her emotions, which would only add to the feelings from the bad news. Her brain does not simply lose all sense of thought, or right and wrong though. Mary could still make the choice to or to not kill him. Though her action was not planned out, she knew full well what she was trying to do.
To summarize, Mary Maloney should be charged with second degree murder for her horrid actions. Though she had never planned to murder her husband whom she had loved so much, she still killed him all the same. This woman could not bear the thought of losing Patrick Maloney, so she chose to take her anger and fear out on the man when he least expected.
