Historically, women have always had roles in the Bible. One woman that stands out in the bible is Mary Magdalene. Many documents and gospels about her life have been lost or destroyed throughout the years. Her role in history has changed from a repentant prostitute to possible Apostle of Jesus. What is know is she was one of Jesus most devoted followers. Questions about her role in Christianity have been clouded with mystery. What is know, is that Mary was present at the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, when others lost faith she did not. Many passages and quotes in new found gospels seem to point to Mary’s imperative role in forming the Catholic church. The Gospel of Mary states “Peter said to Mary,“Sister, we know that the Savior loved you more than all other women. Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember, the things which you know that we don’t because we haven’t heard them.” Mary responded, “I will teach you about what is hidden from you.” And she began to speak these words to them. She is thought to be a great mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer. During this time period, education of women was completely unheard of. The role of women in society was mostly as a caregiver to the family. At the height of her career, she was one of the leading mathematicians and philosophers of that age teaching to an ever growing audience. Her philosophical views were considered pagan and radical at the time. She preached in the Neoplatonic style of philosophy. During this time there was turmoil brewing between religious factions in Alexandria and much of the unrest was attributed to Hypatia and her influence on the Alexandrian prefect Orestes.
