Mary Magdalene was considered a great sinner. Mary had seven demons in her. Many considered her to be mentally ill while others claimed she was a prostitute. Many believed Mark to be describing Mary Magdalene when he says, “a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years” and as time passed she grew worse (5:25). Others believe that regardless of which person Mark was describing Mary Magdalene “would have certainly identified herself with this woman” (Grassi 61). Mary was isolated from everyone because they thought she had some sort of disease, thus leading to people labeling her as “unclean” and people believed that her disease was contagious. She went up to Jesus and touched him thinking “he was above all uncleanness and could share his inner powers to make her whole” and cure her (Grassi 62). At, this moment Jesus just simply asked who touched him, when he could have yelled and have been angry. Jesus was kind, and patiently waited for the person to reply. When Mary admitted to Jesus it was her, He did not turn her away like everyone else did. Jesus publicly forgave all her sins. Mary Magdalene was cured by Jesus and became herself again. Now she had the ability to choose what she wanted to do in life and to achieve her goals. But instead she choses to leave her current life and worldly desires behind to join Jesus. Jesus’ acceptance of her was kind, and his kindness and faith made her want to become one of Jesus’ disciples. Moltmann-Wendel, in her work The Women Around Jesus, states, ““for her, being healed of her illness became salvation. She felt salvation, very clearly indeed” (Moltmann-Wendel 68). Mary Magdalene being cured by Jesus led her to change her lifestyle. She devoted her life to now preaching the words of Christ. Even though everyone in the village thought that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute or one of the greatest sinners, Jesus
