On January 15,1842, Fitzroy, Victoria, the first child of Scottish couple, Alexander Mackillop and Flora MacDonald was born. Their child, the eldest of eight, was a girl named Mary. Mary’s father spent years in Rome studying priesthood, she grew up with her father educating her.
Family
Mary’s family was her parents and siblings. After her father spent a few years in Rome he fell ill and returned to Scotland, however in 1835, he alongside his parents, migrated to Australia. His family was quite poor though and lived with friends and relatives.
Early Life
Mary’s success started the age of sixteen. Mary supported her family as a clerk, a governess and a teacher at the Portland school. Mary was a governess to her uncle’s children in Penola, there she met a man called Father Julian Tenison Woods. He owned a large parish and needed assistance in religious teaching, of course Mary wished to go and assist. Young women joined Mary and that began the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary later opened more schools and continued travelling for God’s work.
Achievements
Mary is a very inspirational women and has had so much success in her lifetime. Mary is a influence to most Catholics as she dedicated her life to God’s work. Here is a list of Mary’s achievements:
Mary opened the first Saint Joseph’s School, formed the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph, she travelled with the sisters to cities and small outback settlements in Australia, New Zealand and now Brazil, Uganda and Thailand. Mary opened orphanages for the care of the homeless and refuges for ex prostitutes and prisoners who wished for a fresh start. She was also asked by Bishop Shiel to come to Adelaide to start a school in
