Mary Jones was one of Americas first labor activist, during the eight-tenth century. She was born in 1837 in Cork, Ireland but migrated with her family to Memphis, Tennessee. She then met her husband George Jones and had four children. Just as she adjusted to her comfortable situation, she lost her entire family to the yellow fever epidemic. After trying to regain control of her life, yet another disaster hit as she lost everything in the Great Chicago fire of 1871. After losing everything, she declared to make a change. Jones then pursued the Knights of Labor Union where she would fight to reform the long work days men, women, and children endured. Along with higher wages, safer workplaces and ending child labor.
