At this time, there was a vast amount of fog in London. This fog was very thick and polluted. “The smoke-like pollution was so toxic it was even reported to have choked cows to death in fields” (“The Great”). There were many accidents and deaths due to this heavy fog. It brought road, air, and rail transportation to a standstill. This event was unforgettable, but it certainly wasn’t the first smog to hit the capital. In this advertisement, three things were brought to people’s attention: it questioned research findings implicating smoking as a cause of cancer, promised consumers that their cigarettes were safe, and pledged to support impartial research to investigate smoking being harmful to human health. There were multiple people who smoked during this time period, and this had to affect them to an extreme! It was like a life or death situation. You either put yourself and your health at risk by continuing to smoke, or you quit just to be on the safe side. Many people continued smoking anyways. This was a huge game changer in history because this is when more people were put at risk to cancer.
