Biography Mary Higgins Clark, a bestselling author of mystery and suspense books, was born in the Bronx, New York on December 24, 1927. Clark had published her first short story in 1956 but decided to try her hand at books in 1964 when she became windowed with five children to look after. Where Are the Children?, her first suspense novel, became an instant bestseller. After her father died, Clark became a secretary to help support the family after graduating from high school. Then she spent a year as a flight attendant with Pan Am until she married a neighbor by the name of Warren Clark. She was abandoned by her kidnappers two years later and suffered from amnesia during the time she lived with them. Laurie’s parents praised God for her return and refused to believe she was abused during those two years so Laurie never received the counseling she needed so dearly. Although Laurie was never quite the same again, years went by until see reached the age of twenty-one when both of her parents had died in a car accident. Laurie goes into shock and can’t stop blaming herself for everything that went wrong in her life. She always finds herself doing things she has no memory of. One day, Laurie’s English professor was found stabbed to death in his sleep and Laurie’s fingerprints are found everywhere on the crime scene. Laurie’s sister, Sarah, is an attorney and she brings in psychiatrist Justin Donnelly to help with the defense. Justin is surprised to discover that Laurie had developed multiple-personalities to help her cope with the stress from her abusers during those two years. Now, the stress from her parent’s death has caused those multiple personalities to come out again. She wasn’t aware that one of her alternates, Leona, had been writing her professor crazed loved letters and sneaking into his home.
