The artwork itself was oil on canvas. But the colors were so realistic and exquisite because of the color schemes that Mary had chosen. For color wise, Mary chose her colors very carefully. Purple, white, and green became her main color focuses in this specific artwork. A lot of value, hue, intensity, secondary, complimentary, and optical color mixing were combined with the colors in the artwork. Using purple caused Mary to use primary colors (Red and blue) to make the color purple in order to add brightness to it. She then did the same thing with yellow and blue as her second primary color choices to make

For purple and green, optical color mixing was easy. With white, optical color mixing wasn’t easy as Mary thought. But the colors were in the right order and were done the right way. With the color white, Mary had to experiment with the primary and the complimentary colors to get the white that she wanted. As for the design, that became fun for Mary to do. Mary had done a lot of contour and implied lines to get everything placed in the right way. As for shapes, Mary wanted the shapes to be on the lilacs and on the vase itself. The shapes caused a lot of positive interaction with the colors and a lot of negative interactions. As for the values, they were combined with the colors and the shapes that were chosen. It depended if sharp edges were used or dull edges in the artwork.

The artist uses an afocal emphasis because there are multiple stories going on and even the smallest details have some significance. For example, there are forbidden apples that are guarded by snake and there are women playing music and s head of a goddess at the top, and on the back each person is holding something different and not making it really clear who the hero is and his significance. The artist also uses the repetition of swirls and pillars at the top that go around the border of the vase and other back the wreath-style along the border which are used as decorative ornamentation with a simple repetitive rhythm throughout the vase. Another example, is that above the tomb there are three sets of feather-like patterns that are the same. However, the rhythm give the painting a sense of separate artistry, because there are several situations happening in the center of the vase and then when you travel farther up, it is just patterns and swirls filling in the gap so the artwork feels somewhat disconnected and…

Within the book, colors are always described in great detail. One such example is, “a bruise on his face that in the oncoming days will change from mauve, to violet, to dull viridian green” (Hawdon, 2015, Part 2, Chapter 8). The colors represent the hope for a better world. A world where all colors can be seen instead of just black and white. The colors can do away with fear and bring comfort.…

There is a feeling of connection between the three of them by the way they are all looking at each other and the cross. Although I could find no documentation on this, I feel there is also a symbol of the trinity in the three flowers to Mary's left side. The flowers are very prevalent and are connected to the figures in the painting by having the same color that is in the Virgin's shirt. It is also speculated that the water in the background symbolizes the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The fact that Mary is barefoot in the painting indicates that she is walking on holy ground.…

She puts dead bees at the bottom of the container which resembles the inside of a person. These bees are completely dead and have been dead a while because it is said that “she must have swept the corners of her studio.” Although still dying because they are plucked from their life source, the rose petals are more alive than the bees but dying nonetheless. Therefore, the woman must feel her vitality slipping and this changes the way she views her own body. Being “almost sixty” and having a younger man court then reject her must have made the painter (or any woman) invoke resentment concerning the association of beauty and vitality.…

Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting.
