Mary Anne Warren's Argument Analysis

Improved Essays
In her piece, Mary Anne Warren argues the permissibility of abortion by holding the moral acceptance of abortion is founded on the following argument: fetuses are not persons so therefore killing them is not killing a person hence having an abortion is morally permissible (432). To Warren, ‘human being’ is used in different contexts thinks that 'human being' is used in two different senses in both argument 1. and 2. In argument 1, 'human being' is being used in a moral connotation to mean a 'person' or 'true member of the moral community'. But it does not mean that the fetus is a person, and it is persons with rights, essentially, the right to life. (433). Warren sets forth with her argument by defining the moral community. for a person to …show more content…
A human fetus is a human at a very early stage in his or her development
A fetus is closely related to a person than a human and has the potential to be a “person” so therefore a fetus should be classified as a person.
Does abortion intentionally kill a human person? I ask this question to present a case on intentions. We should have value in our intentions. Abortions intentionally kill innocent human beings. From the point of conception, you were a developing innocent human person
Even if there isn’t a consensus if we don’t know if a fetus is a person doesn’t mean we should kill them. If you are driving at night and see something on the road that looks like a black bag but is in-fact a raccoon, would you run over it, or take precaution and drive around it?
Although Warren makes a good argument, she forgets to include the reasoning for the abortion. We must look at and take into account the intentions of said decision to have an abortion. If the intention is selfish then the killing of a fetus is unjust. Many women have abortions because of the convenience of not having the responsibility to raise a child because it doesn’t go along with their life plans. It doesn’t mean they have the right to kill that fetus. Adoption and other options could be chosen instead of intentional

The words, “assault and murder”, in the sentence means those actions that intentionally harm pregnant women and lead them to abortion. But in the progress of legal abortion, doctors will first determine which type of abortion is the most suitable one for pregnant women, and perform a secure surgery. Furthermore, in biology, fetuses have the potential to be people but they are not people. On personal feeling, people treat the baby they want as unborn baby. The act protect unborn babies, but do not protect fetus, because their parents have the right to choose abortion.…

Abortion is wrong, but no one should be judged for the actions and/or decisions they make. Every human being that breathes, walks, and thinks, can decide what to do with their body. In this paper I agree with Don Marquis’s view of abortion. Abortion is wrong because it deprives the fetus from its future. In other words, abortion is wrong because killing a future child stops it from growing and making a difference to their lives.…

This analogy is challenging the more extreme view held by those in opposition to abortion. This view finds abortion “impermissible even to save the mother’s life.” Imagine a woman has become pregnant and in the same day learns of a newly developed heart disease that will kill her if she carries her baby to term. The baby has a right to life, but so does the woman. Thomson brings up the argument most familiar. “Performing the abortion would be directly killing the child, whereas doing nothing would not be killing the mother, but letting her die.” The conclusion that is drawn from this scenario is that your own right to life gives you the moral right to “unplug” yourself if your life is threatened.…

Dejectedly, abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. Is abortion morally right or wrong? Well that would depend on who you ask. For those that feel abortion is morally right would argue that a woman has a right to decide what happens to her body. Yet, those that feel abortion is morally wrong would argue that life starts at conception therefore killing a fetus is murder.…

The Permissibility of Abortion: Noonan V. Thompson The topic of abortion has been of much dispute throughout time. Some seeing abortion as the mother’s right to choice, others as murder. Most pro-life supporters argue that fetuses have the right to life and to aborting it is murder. Judith Thompson concedes that fetuses may have the right to life but that only gives the fetus a right to not be unjustly killed. Thus, if abortion is justifiable, then abortion is morally permissible.…

Disregarding the mother’s perspective can be compared to getting an arm amputated and declaring the action is immoral from the arms point of view. Abortion differs in each case and no situation is the same, to equate a case to another is immoral and unfair to the parties involved. Marquis writes “Since we do believe that it is wrong to kill defenseless little babies, it is important that a theory of the wrongness of killing easily account for this” although he is using emotional blackmail, it does not stray me from pointing out that embryos are not babies and due to the account of miscarriages and health issues it is not determined they will have a future. Pregnancy is a dangerous time for the mother and fetus and most miscarriages happen between 7 and 12 weeks. Killing is the worst of crimes except in the cases of self-defense.…

“Murder is the “unlawful killing of a human being” with some level of intent.”(source 6) People are right about abortion being murder. But what they don’t know is that the baby in the womb isn’t actually considered alive until 16-17 weeks in the womb so if the woman was to have the abortion within the 16 to 17 weeks then it really wouldn’t be considered murder and besides the woman should be able to choose if she wants an abortion because she may have health problems or she just wouldn’t be able to take care of the child. People say that abortion should be illegal because you’re murdering a human being which could be true at some point but again some people don’t know that the baby isn’t fully alive until 16-17 weeks. For example “This is why abortion must be illegal if murder is illegal. It should never be “lawful” to kill any innocent human being.” In this quote they are saying that it should never be lawful to kill an innocent human being but these people don’t know what situation the woman could be in and why she needs the abortion.…

Some people say it’s their choice whether they can kill their baby or not but people should choose not to kill an innocent child. Abortion is a very controversial topic these days with many opinions. Personally, I am strongly against the idea of a mother killing their unborn baby. Also, if a person is not financially stable enough to have a child they should take every precaution so that they don't get pregnant. There are also programs for people who are not financially a stable enough to take care of a child so that cannot be used as an excuse.…

Question 2 Can Marquis’ account of the wrongness of abortion consistently allow for exceptions to a moral sanction against the act of terminating pregnancy? Why or why not? Marquis derives his argument against abortion on the perception of general wrongness of being involved in killing. Killing human beings is wrong because it deprives majority of them from their own future. It can be argued that the account of wrongness of abortion according to Marquis cannot allow for exceptions to carry out moral sanction which is opposed towards the various acts of termination of pregnancy.…

Marquis first brings up a common argument from pro-life supporters that is too broad and doesn’t necessarily prove anything. Many pro-life supporters would believe “it is always wrong to end a human’s life” therefore, abortion is unethical because it takes away a human’s life. Though the fetus is not yet mature, many believe a fetus is a person because it has human DNA and is made of human cells. Marquis doesn’t support this because it would assume that even killing cancer cells is unethical because after all, cancer cells are composed of human cells too. Killing cancer cells would be in the same category as abortion because both are killing human cells.…
