Did you know Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the first black Canadian woman to publish a newspaper in North America? That’s right, Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the first person who stood up for women’s rights and blacks’ rights. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on October 9, 1823. Her parents were Abraham and Harriet. She was born into a family of 13 children and was the oldest of all children. Her family was forced to move to West Chester, Pennsylvania, because there were no black schools in Delaware. When Mary Ann grew up, she worked hard and returned to Delaware to open a black school for the children seeking education there. She also wanted to stop slavery as well. The meaning of being hopeful is to have hope for something. Mary Ann Shadd Cary is hopeful because she always had to address the societal issues. She joined others to stop slavery together, but realized that other ways weren’t effective enough. She decided to stop slavery all by herself.

Next, being a resolute person means being extremely determined. Living in the 19th century, where discrimination towards women and blacks was severe, it took lots of courage to be able to publish a newspaper and not hesitate to publish it because she was a woman or because she was black.

After that, the meaning of being a hardworking person is to be a person who works very hard to reach their goals or targets. Mary Ann Shadd Cary was as hardworking as a hummingbird collecting pollen because she worked very hard to be able to publish that newspaper under discrimination, and her responsibilities as a sister to 12 other children and being a teacher, newspaper editor, and activist showed me and people all around the world she had to work extra
