Marvin Gaye Analysis

1) Spandau Ballet: “True”
The song had a dreamy melancholy quality to the sound. The lyric about the pill and the slow rhythm does make it seem as if the singer is on drugs, or at least relaxed from downing half a bottle of wine. To me, this is a mix of unrequited love and the difficulty of the writer to express it. When the saxophone starts playing in the instrumental break, that's when you really feel it.
This song sounds like it’s about a person who fell in love with someone they had a fling with but they were too nervous to tell them. They tried to get away, “bought a ticket to the world” for different perspective, but a part of them was missing, missing the comfort that love brings. So many things in their mind they want to say, and that’s

The emotion in Marvin's voice in this song is unparalleled to many other singers. In the song, as well as throughout the album, Gaye used multiple tracks to sing many of his backing vocals. “War is not the answer /For only love can conquer hate” I see it as a call for communication instead of violence to resolve conflicts.
The song speaks openly and honestly about racism, war, and sexism. In consideration of the anti-war movement and African Americans’ struggle for civil rights, Marvin asks everyone to reexamine their priorities and relationships. This song begins with the sounds of a party which has been speculated by many that the song’s beginning might portray a welcome home bash for a Vietnam veteran. Gaye had his friends provide some of the voices.
8) Queen: “Somebody To Love”
This song is sung in a gospel style, with the voices of Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor multitracked to sound like a choir. The lyrics, especially combined with the gospel influence, create a song about desperation and soul-searching. Every line in this song is written from the heart, a true tale of being lonely and asking for companionship. The meaning is clear, and conveyed with such breathtaking passion that I get shivers each time I listen to

The song creates almost a surrealist set of images as the lyrics narrative scenes of mundane and uneventful life. The song centres on the theme of loneliness within the whole of society. Through the songs narrative Bowie address the collective loneliness of mundane life as well as the loneliness which is brought on through media. I believe that the relation people can make to this line is because of the issues our nation has with terrorism. Many Americans have experienced the hate and pain from terrorism, so much, that they would prefer not to experience again. Not to mention this song was written just a couple of years after September 11, 2001. The logos in this phrase is that we are trying to stop terrorism in our nation and the world, but that we will never be able to. There will always be terrorism in our country.…

As stated in the playbill, The Last Five Years is “a show about a relationship, about a marriage…it’s told from two angles. From the man’s point of view, it starts at the first meeting and ends in the present…from the woman’s point of view, it starts in the present and works back to the first meeting.” (citation). The cast was made up of college students Caroline Stuart (Cathy), who produced the play as a part of her senior study, and Austin Loo (Jamie).…

This all-acoustic affair continues for the first half minute, which intensifies the first lyrics of the song, “Hello there”. Then a monotone male voice of Mark Hoppus cuts in “the angel from my nightmare,” implying sadness or a haunting memory of someone. Opening up with these lyrics are so powerful because so many people, of both genders, can relate to losing hope in something and then having an “angel” come into your life to save you. When you meet someone like this, it is all about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people. Additionally, the popularity of the lyrics “we can live like Jack and Sally if we want, where you can always find me and we'll have Halloween on Christmas,” ("I Miss You” Web).…

The lyrics joined with the alternative style of instrumentation makes for an odd combination. The message originally takes a lofty feel, suggesting that love could be a game of sorts. The artists’ incorporation of “Stand By Me” evolves the sentiment of the message. The playful tone of the song continues, but gives the message a more sarcastic impression. The facetious happiness of the message gives promise to the heartache the singer is truly feeling.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…

The songwriter crafted this song in such a way, that the person who is listening to the song is involuntary narrating these lyrics. The narrator in this song is none other than yourself. The songwriter makes you the narrator of the song, so that only you-yourself can make a change. ‘I see the kids in the street, with not enough to eat, who am I , to be blind pretending not to see their needs’- the narration of this song shows you the sad things that happen using your own eyes. That only you have the power to help them, or ignore them.…
