Marva Collins, the founder, principal, and teacher of Westside Preparatory School believed that all students were teachable. As a teacher in the public school system in Chicago, Illinois she witnessed firsthand how black students were disservice by public school education. Many students were labeled with a learning disability, which led them to believe that they were unable to learn, and thus they had given up on education. Marva Collins saw this as an issue and decided to take those children labeled with a learning disability and prove that they had the capability to learn just as everyone else. When first starting Westside Prep, Marva Collins withdrew her retirement fund with the belief that it should be enough to cover the budget (Marva Collins movie, 32 min) She soon found out that the costs of opening Westside Prep exceeded her estimation. Which led to resistance from not only her husband but this also delayed to the opening of Westside Prep. As the school grew in size the number of resources such as human, financial, and material was not also to grow as fast. Thus in 2008, Westside Prep was forced to shut down. Parents resisted the rise in price. more parents are seeking alternatives to the $5,500 tuition, which has led to a steady decrease in funds. Parents no longer supported Westside Prep. “We are closing our school . . . because the community we wanted to serve has not supported, or could not support the school, to the extent financial considerations demand.” (Cynthia Collins news report, 2008)

As discussed in class, since there was not a final evaluation of Westside Prep it is difficult to certain of the reasoning for the closing of Westside Prep. Some say it was due to financial reason, while professor Lumumba offered the alternative that the innovation was no longer needed. Whatever the source may be it is for certain that Marva Collins faced a high volume of resistance throughout the history of Westside Prep.
