Martyn’s entrance turned heads when he walked into the crowded restaurant. It was only for a furtive glance though. The diners quickly returned their attention back to the plates in front of them. As if they were not interested. Yet a shift in the atmosphere was marked by the stillness descending on the room. The conversation had stopped. The polished metal of its trim reflected the bright lights inside the dining room. Beyond and into the distance stretched the grid of city streets, and on the horizon, a range of blue-green tree-clad hills under a blanket of gray clouds.
“This space is only for me,” Martyn said with evident pride.
A waiter came up the stairs and handed a menu to Storm. He placed a large silver cantor in the center of the table and stepped back without pouring. Martyn filled Storm's glass to the top, then filled his own.
“Below us is the members’ guest dining room. I had this extra floor added for myself and a single guest.” He smacked his lips after a sip of the water and added with a hint of satisfaction. “The members are uncomfortable with my tiny addition. They need time to get used to it.”

These are ionized metallic salts injected into the atmosphere. A vast quantity they have achieved over time by carrying it up there, mostly by fully automated large aircraft. They have manufactured-plasma! Do you understand?”
“No—I don't get it at all.”
“Plasma is the fourth fundamental state of matter. It is a thing apart from a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Yet it is the most common form of matter in space. They have surrounded the world in manmade plasma.
“The scientist Nikola Tesla experimented with electromagnetism and technology to manipulate plasma. He wanted to illuminate the entire atmosphere of the Earth by applying electromagnetic energy to plasma at an altitude of some thirty-five thousand feet.
“Earth has natural plasma. There is the Aurora Borealis in the Northern Hemisphere, and there's the Aurora Australis down here in the Southern Hemisphere. Another natural occurring example is lightning. Man-made plasma and natural plasma.”
“I don't understand the point of the plasma in the atmosphere. You mean the elite want bright light all around the

The question of why it only had a strand and not all the lights burned out lingered in my mind. It took me a few minutes before I had the aha moment when I remembered being taught about circuits in Honors Physics.…
