Martin Van Buren I, Martin Van Buren, was the 8th president. If you lived through December 5th , 1782 to July 24th, 1862, you might know me as “The Little Magician”. Or maybe the “red fox” because of my cunning politics. I was a democratic president. I “ruled” from 1837 to 1841. My wife was Hannah Hoes Van Buren. I have four children, which are Abraham, John, Martin;named after me. And Smith. I grew up in Kinderhook, New York where my father was a tavern owner. I learned the law by working and apprenticing for attorneys in New York. In 1803 I got better and I finally became a lawyer.
