In Martin L. King’s speech he asks people what their opinion on education was. He explains that some people they call “Educated” may not be as educated as they thought. He explains that “Educated” people take advantage on the less educated and make them think what they want them to think. Secondly, I will deduct how Plato and King would feel about the education being taught today and lastly, I am going to share my own experiences and thoughts about the main purpose of education today. Reflecting back to my educational experience from elementary to high school, I cannot recall a single moment where I felt I had agency over my opinions or my overall education experience. I grew up in a community that places respect over anything. I was taught one simple phrase: don’t speak unless spoken to. This main value was taught at home and eventually made its way into the school curriculum. Students were taught to obediently listen to the teachers and were encouraged to ask less questions.…

The will to learn exceeds way beyond a classroom; it is a ceaseless thirst that begins within the individual. How one perceives the world starts internally first , but in order to develop oneself, external sources are necessary. Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for more than equality among humans, but also for the expansion of one’s mind. As a person who has been the student, the teacher, and the observer of both, I know that the education system established in America can not, as Dr. King claimed, enable every individual “to think intensively and to think critically. ” With that said, America perpetuates an uneven balance of intelligence and integrity forcing the impressionable student to choose one or the other.…
