One statement, or word even, can have a lasting impact on your life. It can stay with you forever, and sit there in your mind, taunting. The sword can kill; you’re here one minute and gone the next. The question here is, which will change you the most? “Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate.” Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to change without violence. You might change one problem using violence, but the pen makes the lasting impact. The Jim Crow Laws, 1865-1866, changed the way African Americans lived, worked, and talked, and they originated from hate. These laws, written and documented, didn’t need any help from violence to make an impact. These laws were only enforced for one year, and most remember …show more content…
In this day and age, many people learn about events through the media. Television news, social media, and texting carry the news around. If a shooting happens in Alabama, you probably won’t know about it in California without the news. You might need the violent act to occur first for media to share it with the world. Nevertheless, the pen carries it to everyone in their homes. Clearly, the news has power. Power to influence the minds of someone set on a certain opinion, and power to make events seem one way when they really happened differently. We’ve all fallen victim to peer pressure in one way or another, and though the newscasters may not be peers, they still influence the way we think.
Malcolm X was a man who got what he wanted through acts of violence. He ended up being imprisoned for the things he did, but Malcolm X is also remembered for his biography. He made such a significant impact on people’s lives that he was written about, so we could learn about his life and what he did through the written word. Though he saw violence as the right thing sometimes, he also believed in the power of learning and education. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” -Malcolm
