In this day and age, many people learn about events through the media. Television news, social media, and texting carry the news around. If a shooting happens in Alabama, you probably won’t know about it in California without the news. You might need the violent act to occur first for media to share it with the world. Nevertheless, the pen carries it to everyone in their homes. Clearly, the news has power. Power to influence the minds of someone set on a certain opinion, and power to make events seem one way when they really happened differently. We’ve all fallen victim to peer pressure in one way or another, and though the newscasters may not be peers, they still influence the way we think.
Malcolm X was a man who got what he wanted through acts of violence. He ended up being imprisoned for the things he did, but Malcolm X is also remembered for his biography. He made such a significant impact on people’s lives that he was written about, so we could learn about his life and what he did through the written word. Though he saw violence as the right thing sometimes, he also believed in the power of learning and education. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” -Malcolm
