Martin Luther King's Assassination Analysis

Martin Luther King’s assassination was not justified due to the fact that he fought for freedom from white oppression and equal rights for all people; however, he was seen as a threat because he had an enormous amount of power in a growing population. Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist and politician; he held speeches, led marches, and participated in protests. Although he was seen as a hero in the eyes of most African Americans, some saw him as a thief, murderer, and a genuinely awful person. In 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis, TN on the balcony of his motel suite. King was a politician that wanted to be seen as equal in white America. A report in 2012 revealed over 20,000 letters and messages of hate were sent to Dr. King. Of course, the members of the KKK sent a large portion of the messages;however, black people sent letters to him as well. In one of the letters sent to Dr. King, a supporter of King spoke about how he uses his supporters’ money to make him a millionaire while his supporters are dying in what he calls “peaceful” protest. One of his specific quotes was “We would rather work and earn our place rather than make a multi-millionaire out of you and your family by taking the pittance pay we get to make you a millionaire...deaths caused by your calm riots we as a body had rather not have anything else to do with you or your so called righteous riots…”Also, as so few people did know, Martin Luther King Jr. did have several mistresses. Even in his last year of life, a woman that he may have planned to leave Corretta Scott King for was staying in the motel where he died. Others accused him of being a murderer because of the several deaths that happened during some of his protests. He was an excellent person to many, but was an enemy to the same
