This is what Martin Luther King Jr. had to struggle with and tried to get this message across with his speech “The Purpose of Education” to a group of students in Morehouse College. Martins point of view on what education should be is, “ Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education.” We should all strive to have this mindset in our educational careers but what does intelligence plus character actually mean?Intelligence plus character is to be more effective by having real goals for your life, to think logically and scientifically, and to think intensively and critically with efficiency.

Education plays a vital role in our society. Without it, the success and development of many countries would be nonexistent. Due to education, people can understand the difference between right and wrong, and they are able to create equal standards of many things, such as living, throughout the nation. This theory, however, is why Frederick Douglass was unable to openly and easily obtain the education that should should have been available from the very start. The racist society that he was forced to live in forbade him from earning an education whilst the same society enforced the education of Benjamin Franklin.…

Therefore, White Americans continued to earn the superior jobs because they were attending exceptional schools and getting a higher level of education. The most powerful thing in the world is knowledge and even though African-Americans were allowed to attend school now the majority went to schools that weren’t funded well. As a result, African-Americans continued to receive an inferior education. For this reason, the movement began to use the “separate but equal” principle on their side. “Segregation did lifelong damage to black children, undermining their self-esteem,” argued Thurgood Marshall.…

Time after time we here about Martin Luther King and all he has done to create and improve the country for minority groups. While in jail Martin Luther King Jr. wrote to the white clergymen regarding his present activities; he was an outsider and his protests were untimely and unwise. King successfully rebuttals these claims through establishing his credibility and generating a candid tone which he then uses to proclaim that it is “... the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity.” and push people to create a society where segregation no longer exists. Martin Luther King effectively counters the white clergymen with his claim of not being that he is not an outsider in Birmingham. “...I,…

Lyndon B. Johnson once said that “Education is not a problem. Education is an opportunity.” Education has always been a way for children to expand their knowledge, and expand their minds as well. However, it has been brought to the attention of many, that education is now a way to force ideals down the throats of knowledge thirsty children. In trying to fit in standardized tests, teachers and schools have lost sight of the true purpose of education: to teach young people the rights and responsibilities of citizens.…

“Education is learning what you didn’t even know you didn’t know.” This quote said by Daniel J. Boorstin, an American historian at the University of Chicago, is one way people may view the educational system in the United States. Getting an education is about learning things that one would have never studied before and improving one’s intellectual thought process. A similar quote my math teacher used to say: “It’s the same thang with another name,” brings out an argument that education is learning to think about what one knows in a different light. In Gerald Graff’s essay, “Hidden Intellectualism”, he responds to the educational system, arguing that street smarts are just as important as book smarts.…

Thomas Jefferson said that the goal of schools and getting an education is to “understand the duties to his neighbors or countries, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either, to know his rights; to exercise with order and justice those he retains (High School Made You a Better Person).” Our education needs to focus on the aspects of learning, but also on developing students into future citizens of this country with moral standards. Society needs education to meets the demands for the new fad that may be sweeping the country, but that should not take away from the fact that students need to learn how to be good and moral citizens. When you help develop a student 's moral standard you also help them become more social because it causes them to interact with other students. The ways schools teach should not vary because of a social status, or an economic situation.…
