The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. If someone were to ask me what I thought was one of the biggest issues in the United States today, I would automatically answer with the issue of racism. Many famous individuals in years past have made large contributions to the Civil Rights movements, but none have compared to Martin Luther King Jr., the man who put civil rights movements into the spotlight nearly sixty years before the Black Lives Matter movement ever took the focus of today. Martin and several other activists organized the March on Washington, a trek that included 200,000 to 300,000 people on August 28th, 1963. King gave the speech on the steps on the Lincoln Memorial and gave his powerful testimony about equality for African Americans in the United States, saying in his speech, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’” This speech became the most famous piece of the 1960’s Civil Rights’ Movement, and made Martin a household name around the …show more content…
Since then, dozens of men and women have been murdered because of racial injustice including Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, and Alton Sterling. Protests and violence has broken out around the country, with people hoping their voices will be heard by the American public, just like King’s voice was heard nearly sixty years
