Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights pioneer and reverend, undoubtedly positively altered the way the U.S as a country looked towards African Americans. King stressed the importance of judging people by their character rather than the color of their skin. Despite all of the great things Martin Luther King Jr. did, if he were to be judged by the content of his character, his accomplishments may be overshadowed by his flaws. Many of those working for King at the time knew he had a major weakness for women (vultaggio). As a reverend, King is well aware of the Ten Commandments, which define the most basic principles of Christianity. One of the Ten Commandments happens to be “Thou shall not commit adultery” (bennett). In July, 1963, Robert Kennedy permitted the FBI to wiretap King’s home, his office, and any phone he was believed to be using in an attempt to provide evidence of King being involved with communism (vultaggio). Although the FBI failed in bringing King down with communism charges, they did shed some light on the life of the civil rights leader. While in a Washington D.C hotel, the FBI successfully caught King in the act of adultery via audio tape. This tape was later sent to Coretta in an attempt to turn her against her husband. The night before King’s assassination was not spent with his wife Coretta, but rather with a young woman in the Loraine Motel (vultaggio). As a reverend, King preached the Ten Commandments and it is hypocritical, to say the least, to have affairs with multiple women. As a Christian, all commandments should be followed.
