MARTIN LUTHER: was born Nov. 10 1483, in Eisleben Germany. Hon and Magerate Luder welcomed to their home their 2nd born. Next day he was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church as Martin Luther. (I am not sure why the name was changed from Luder to Luther).
Hon Luder was a labor, Martin stated later "he was proud to be the son of a peasant". As a young man he helped support his family by singing on street.

Just by ascending you would free a loved one from purgatory.
At the top of stairs you see a red spot in the marble, where it is said that the blood of Jesus dropped. Upon reaching this spot one would bow and kiss that red spot.
I have on many occasions visited this church. My first few visits the marble steps were visible, however the last time the steps have been covered with wood as to protect the marble.
This church is important to the reformation as Martin Luther was ascending these steps on his knees praying, Eph 2:8-9 kept impressing on his mind. 8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works,” For the Catholic Church salvation was by works, like climbing these stairs.
About one half way up the stairs Martin Luther realizing his salvation was not by works, stood up and walked the rest of the way to top. This was the beginning of the reformation.
Withr all this in his mind Luther returned to Wittenberg with the desire to convince the church of its misunderstanding of the scripture. In 1517 he wrote his 95 thesis and posted them on the church
