The real Martin Guerre is the person who arrived at the end of the movie. However, people crafted in their minds who they wanted Martin Guerre to be and they created Arnauld. At the beginning of the movie, Martin’s character was distant, not motivated to work, and unintimate. He was Martin. It could be seen that many people did not appreciate these aspects of his personality. For example, his father yelled at him for not helping the family with the field work and Bertrande was sadden when he rejected her affection. But when this new “Martin” returned, he had all of the traits that the villagers have been craving to see in Martin. He was friendly, hardworking, intimate, and caring.
