Martian To An Elegant Solution

Mathematics is a universal truth that not even nature can defy; it is logic and it is beauty. Mathematics is found at the core of my life and in the lives of every living thing: shells show off the fibonacci sequence, humans live neverending patterns, every great architectural masterpiece from the Parthenon to Frank Lloyd Wright's houses are built and designed with great mathematical precision. To break from pattern is the only unknown that exists, but it will always show growth and leave room for new experiences. SUMMET has the ability to push me to grow and expand. I should be chosen to attend SUMMET because I am a student that wants to learn, that strives to go beyond high school, and one who will benefit from the furthering of my education. I see that learning does not just occur within the school building, but also from researching, reading, and seeking knowledge elsewhere. From The Martian to An Elegant Solution, I draw little pieces of scientific and mathematic truths, which fascinate me and send me on a search for …show more content…
I have plenty of reason to stress when we move because I try to keep in contact with my ‘friends’, but they quit responding when the relationship no longer benefits them. To overcome the apprehension that I experience in moving, I read anything and everything I can get my hands on as reading distracts and isolates me and because I am terrified to open myself up to others until I forget, or just quit because getting hurt does not justify not trying. In the immortal words of Garth Brooks, “Life is not tried, it is merely surviving if you’re standing outside the fire.” This quote shows that the benefit received from stressful events outweighs the pain they cause. So, it is not nearly enough to just survive, one should endeavor to do what they desire without fear of

In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the family endures a lot of hardships, one of which includes moving from place to place. They hardly stayed anywhere for more than a week, and moved more times than they could count to avoid the law and payments. Jeannette usually had a hard time making friends, so it would have been difficult for her. They eventually stopped the constant relocating, and settled in Welch, West Virginia. It’s been a day or two since we’ve left this room. I’m lost and enraptured by the fragility surrounding our isolation. I spend much of my time counting things. I count the slats on your window blinds, I count the clothes scattered on your bedroom floor, I count the scars on your body. I count every different language and color I could learn to love you in.…

I have always enjoyed mathematics and physics since I could remember, It was after my first interview with an admission counselor that I fell in love with Harvey Mudd College, as guided by an unknown force and led by my intuition. As a follower of analytical and logical thinking, I always used concrete reasons to analyze my impulses and thus prove it as rational. After a long time of reflecting and school research, I came up with three reasons. First of all, Harvey Mudd is exceptionally good in mathematics, which is my major interest. I consider mathematics as one of my lifelong pursuits because it always excites me and brings me big surprises.…

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

Although this may seem like an added expense when money may already be tight, it truly does help to reduce the stress associated with relocating," Bell continues. Math is different from any subject matter in many ways. For example, math is spoken in numbers while almost every other topic is spoken with words. Math also uses a different part of your brain than most disciplines. However, as showcased by award-winning film Hidden Figures, math is most significantly unique in it’s ability to break down barriers created by race, gender, and socioeconomic differences and prejudices. The first article, ‘Exploring the Math in 'Hidden Figures', takes a very math-centric approach to talking about Hidden Figures.…

The beginning of my sixth grade summer, which was all the way back in the year 2011, was actually a great time for me for a lot of reasons. I’d still consider the summer of 2011 to be the best I’ve ever had. I was outside all day, every day either at the park or riding bikes around town with my friends.…

Hi Peeps, Today's Quote "Math is the Music language of Love only given by God in which your heart beats until it stops, along with your breath of life and cellular movement, purpose, and functions, that regulates your love, thoughts and good deeds for God throughout your lifetime." ~ Jon Barnes Many Many choose not to regulate their love, thoughts, and good deeds for God, because of their lust of the flesh, evil, and wicked ways of fake happiness and empty dreams. Living your dreams of slave labor and corruption is not the same and learning, understanding, planning, and executing God's vision and purpose for your life. You must consistently ask God for constant guidance and direction of love to hit your personal targets and goals. Otherwise,…

A lot has been said about how math has its practical uses. But what really stands out to me was when me and my wife were talking about our long term financial goals with our financial advisor. At that time, our advisor is throwing out acronyms and jargons at us that we have no idea what they are about. Terms like Traditional IRA, ROTH IRA, VUL, 401k, College Plan 529 baffled us. But once he slowly defined those technical mumbo jumbo and said the words “compound interest”, that is when I feel grateful towards my high school math teacher.…

The day I found out I was moving, my first reaction was relief, for up until that point, I had concluded that the reason my parents were so serious, was because I’d done something wrong. However, as soon as that thought disappeared, another one replaced it. Why were we moving to DC? We were content in the neighborhood that we lived in, or at least I was. Slowly, I began to realize that I did not like the idea of moving.…

My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…
