Abuses of the Marcos Regime

Martial law is the most ruthless way to extend one’s presidency in a nation. Ferdinand Marcos made the young activists and concerned citizens look like rebels that are trying to ruin our nation. He made it as a reason to impose martial law in our country. But before the imposing of martial law many significant events happened in our country. After he won his election to for presidency in 1965, he planned numerous projects that would definitely boost our economy. He is very ambitious in proposing projects; he even planned to build a nuclear power plant in Bataan. During his regime he had built 20 power plants around the country which was in Bataan, Leyte, tiwi, Makiling-Banahaw, Calaca, Cebu, Pilinpon, and Pantabangan etc. Marcos had also built many major bridges that became very useful for the commuters. One example is the San Juanico Bridge built in the center part of the Philippines. The bridge is 2060 meters long which connects Tacloban to Santa Rita, Samar. Many other bridges were built in the following places Biliran, leyte, Buntun, Cagayan, Candamba, Bulacan, cebu, ilocos norte and many more. This is the start of dictatorship of Marcos. His main reason in putting our country in martial rule is, he want to save the republic from the communist. He wanted to lessen the terrorism in the country thru imposing the Proclamation 1081. The whole country was under the military. But the reason behind all that is Marcos wanted to extend his term and to continue to rule the Philippines. Because of the constitutional change president’s term should not be more than eight consecutive years. They did not say how long the martial law would last.
