Martha Gellhorn had a wealthy homelife. Martha was born in St. Louis Missouri on November 8, 1908 to George and Edna Gellhorn. When Nazi occupied France, Martha wanted to be there when it happened. The United States military did not want women reporting on the front lines for it being too dangerous (“Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998)”). Martha snuck onto a hospital ship after being refused to repost on the front lines. While stowed away on the ship, Martha helped the medical staff take care of the wounded.
