Martha Gellhorn: A Woman Of The 20th Century

Martha Gellhorn was a brave lady and witty woman to be named of the 20th century. She was a well-known American Novelist, but the genre of her writing made here different from the others. It was War. She was basically a journalist, who used to pen her experience of witnessing war-affected people. She reported on three significant conflicts of that time, Spanish War, World War II and Vietnam War. Taking journalism as a career was not common for the women in those days, but Martha Gellhorn had the courage and she proved it too. She was not only the first women correspondence of War, but she also made her work considered as one of the bests of 20th century. The career span was more than 60 years, the major of which was dedicated to War. With her high distrust on the politicians of that time, she mainly advocated the sufferings of the common people and portrayed the same in her fictions. Journalism was an education for her and she used to consider writing as the payment of this education.

Accompanying the photographer Dorotha Lange, she documented the starving people and their miserable lives along with some forbidden subjects which made a noteworthy contribution in American History. Gellhorn was fired for encouraging a group to revolt against the corrupted contractor in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It was time to give her experience a shape of a book.
