Arthur Miller wrote his play “The Crucible” in early 1690’s. At this time the United States was involved with World War 1, and throughout this time the United States was worried about the Soviet Union’s rising powers. The play “The Crucible” was based on the occurrences in America during the 1950’s. It was about witchery and who acted upon witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, was based on Senator Joseph McCarthy’s hunt for communist. During this time period it was tragic because, the act of witchcraft was happening and they needed to find out who was the cause of it. It says,” Then Martha Corey was accused of witchcraft by her husband accidently because, she was reading strange books and he thought she was conquering the dead” ( Sparknotes). The entire witchcraft situation was getting completely outrages because, everybody was pointing fingers at each other, to keep themselves from getting sentenced to death. Even though telling the truth on who really acted upon witchery would have still gotten them sentenced to death, but why blame others for their bad behavior. In “The Crucible” it says, “ In the late March, two of the afflicted girls Mercy Lewis and Abigail Williams, claimed Elizabeth Proctor visited them at night in spirit form and tormented them” ( History of Massachusetts). They risking the lives of the innocent trying to get others to take the prosecution for their mistakes. Which is wrong
