In this week’s case study, we read about efforts to improve Marshall Metro High School in Chicago. Marshall Metro is among the many nation-wide, which was failing to perform up to required federal standards. There were high rates of absenteeism, failing academics, low graduation rates, and un-motivated staff among other problems at the school. The city of Chicago had been awarded twenty million dollars in federal grant money over a period of three years to improve the lowest performing schools. Marshall Metro High was one such school. The school officials hoped to use “data- the relentless collection, evaluation, and application of them” (Banchero, 2011, p. 21) as a way to improve performance.
