The islands were first explored by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s. Although, the Marshall Islands got it’s name from a British captain named john Marshall in 1788. At one point, Germany failed at attempting to colonize the islands in 1885. Japan in other words claimed the island country in 1914, but after battles during World War II, the U.S. took hold of them from the Japanese. Months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the administrative center of the Japanese 16th Fleet Forces Service was Kwajalein Atoll. Their task was the defense of the Marshall Islands. In World War II, during the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign, the United States invaded and occupied the islands in 1944. The battle in the Marshall Islands caused damage that was impossible to repair. The islands’ population suffered from lack of food and various injuries during the American bombing. From 1946 to 1958, the United States tested about 67 nuclear weapons in the Marshall Islands.
