I chose the poem “Spelling Father” by Marshall Davis-Jones.
The reason that I chose this poem and what spoke to me was the fact that this was a young man that was fatherless. When he was explaining everything that mothers do for their children, it just spoke to me on how so many children grow up without having their fathers in their lives.
I would describe the writer’s writing style as one who uses many metaphors to organize his poem verse by verse.
There were many words used in the poem like cleaned, hugged, and kisses, all to describe his mother doing the things he wished his father did for him. His choice of words were very effective being that everyone hearing or reading the poem can comprehend why Marshall refers to his mother
