George Hitt was given five thousand dollars for a shield that would be left in between Earth and Mars and would be picked up by the spaceship on its trek to Mars (Bardsley). This became popular through the NASA competition, where Dr. Hitt was the victor. His idea enable the load of the ship become significantly less because the shield can be left in space instead of having to be launched with the ship. It is also proposed to be reusable. So instead of having the shield be remade on every mission, it is used and then kept in space. Problems that arise from this problem include the increase in difficulty of finding a flight path. The magnetic shield would be orbiting the sun just like any other object. It adds another obstacle for the spaceship to hit before going onto Mars. An even more difficult problem is actually getting the shield every single trip. This causes a large increase of possibility for error since this is a precarious thing to do in space and is another task that needs to be done
