1. The Marriner S Eccles by Paul Manship (American 1885-1966), Moods of Time: Morning 1938. It could be a simple interpretation of morning with the cock, trumpeter, and the throwing of the veil of night. For me though it was throwing away darkness which can be look at as just light or as darkness like fear. I would much rather be up in the light where birds are singing, there is music and happiness.
2. I was really interested with this next piece, first because I am always interested in other cultures and what they believe, second because of the workmanship. This is a smaller size piece like the size of my hand but the detail that is put into it is so amazing to me. It is Yamantaka Vajrabairava by Sino – Tibetan. This buffalo-headed Buddhist deity enslaves gods, demons, birds, and animals that stand for evil and suffering. The most impressive part of this piece to me is the 34 hands he has that represents different aspects of spiritual knowledge. Many are weapons that he uses to destroy

The exhibit was so realistic that when I walked in I really did think it was a collection of books. It was only after I looked closer and slowed down that I realized it was wood to look like books. This is just part of the artist’s, Conrad Bakker, collection of his ongoing Untitled Project series. He is investigating the creation of value as well as relationships between humans and things in economic systems. While I was walking around I did see some books that I recognized, as many were huge parts of American pop culture like the lord of the flies, treasure island, To kill a mockingbird, as well as other genres of writing, encapsulating the human ideologies to learn, and be entertained. That was one of the purposes that I interpreted anyway, to represent different types of ideologies and desires of the world, through artwork that represents the novels and literary works that have had such an impact on world

The installation leads me to the next story where the exhibitions are on display. I follow the rope to the second floor which exhibits Ida Applebroog’s series Catastrophe with its colors contrasting against blank plaster walls. Each individual piece is drawn on five by two-and-half feet mylar sheets. These have a cream color and are translucent with a matte finish. Applebroog’s consistent style involves simple, curvilinear figures that resemble the abstraction often seen in children sketches.…

Throughout history, the human species have not always been able to read or write. One thing humans have always understood are pictures. The cavemen painted on walls in order to document and tell the stories of their lives. In the more modern era, books, especially for children, are filled with pictures in order to help convey the ideas of the writer to all who read his books. This idea of pictures to help support book is shown very well in Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco’s book Days of Destruction Days of Revolt.…

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

Throughout the essay “The Library as Survival”, author Alberto Manguel liberally uses exemplification in order to share with his readers the idea of his own personal library as a mirror for humanity. Like humanity, Manguel believes that books portray the injustice, loss, hope, and passage of time that human beings go through. The catalyst for his thoughts on the subject matter is the well-worn prayer book that he recovers and describes using humanlike words, but that is not where it stops. Manguel also creates many distinctively different narratives using strong, historical imagery and emotional appeals that are combined to expound upon his argument. While most of them do tie into his main analogy in some way, it is truly in his providing an abundance of literary examples that he conveys the importance of books as a means of surviving an often-harsh life.…

Mason Cooley said “reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are”. Even in 21st century, the age of technology, people use books as a source of entertainment and writing as a form of self-expression. Books and reading in general has many benefits like mental stimulation, gaining knowledge and much more.…

We realise that books can be precious and a treasure, greater than material objects like rubies, silver, and gold. This is conveyed through all the devices discussed previously. Both poems, “Five A.M” and “Five Flights Up” deal with the speaker’s reflections on their early morning surroundings and each utilize tone, structure, and imagery to make the speakers’ attitudes known to the reader. However, the attitudes of both speakers to the early morning vary immensely. Both poems show the speakers’ reflections on their early morning surroundings. To begin the story, the narrator uses “direct address to the reader”: the narrator exposes itself and refers to itself as “I”, which reveals the story as a construction (Nikolajeva & Scott, 2006, p.221). Later, when Henry gives up eating books and becomes upset, the narrator asks the direct question to the reader: “What was he to do?”. This creates intimacy between the narrator and the reader and draws the reader in more. One of the most significant devices is Jeffers’ “pastiche of illustrative styles” (Anstey, 2009, p.34). Collage is evident in places as Jeffers draws on a wide range of recycled background materials, including covers, spines, and endpapers from books; lined paper, squared paper and graph paper in notebooks; index cards and pages from dictionaries, atlases; and even maths books.…

In order to identify and mimic the creative prospects of the work that elicit detail, I had to admire certain elements and suspect their relevance to the piece, where only then I could interpret them and advance my own creation from the techniques that I observed. While we study many beautiful pieces of art throughout the entirety of this semester, between the originality, economic struggles, and over complications that are exhibited within this work, I believe this work is the most advanced of which we saw, considering the region from whence it…
