Although there are many variables that cause divorce, the most common reason given in a national survey done by National Fatherhood Initiative reported that 73% of divorced couples said that “lack of commitment” was the reason for their break up.5 Dr. Scott Stanley defines commitment this way, “Commitment is having a long-term view of the marriage that helps us not get overwhelmed by the problems and challenges day to day.”6 That being said, some researchers believe that premarital cohabitation "undermines the legitimacy of formal marriage" and so "reduces commitment of marriage."7 Divorce has become accepted means of escape from marital strife, 70% of Americans believe that divorce, in general, is a morally acceptable choice.8 Even if a couple is having communication disputes and financial strain, the moral commitment to the covenant can uphold a relationship under duress. Without recognizing the true value of the marriage covenant, couples cannot realize the weight and destruction of divorce.
