According to the International Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family, marriage is defined as "stabilized patterns of norms and roles associated with the mutual relationship between husband and wife.” While Some people in their entire lives yearn for the idea of a perfect marriage, yet some people argue that it is just a binding contract in order to reproduce children. However, the concept of marital love is a common goal for many people. It can be considered as a commitment that many people want to take, but it also takes immense courage. A successful marriage must include a love that has intimacy, compassion, and sacrifice. People can not understand the emotions of two people that share an intimate bond unless they have experienced it themselves.

Professor Benjamin Karney and fellow Lisa Neff from the University of Florida states that "compassionate love is personally fulfilling, in that spouses can reap the rewards of their love, but it is also selfless, in that spouses accept their partners for who they are, the good and the bad." Under the research conducted by Karney and Neff, wives have a better understanding of their husbands’ trait, and thus, it contributed to keeping the marriage alive. However, husbands ' understanding of their wives varied yet it did not affect whether or not they would be able to support each other. Standing by their decisions and choices whether they may be right or wrong shows consideration for the other party.
