‘Marriage at First sight’ an article by Paula Span narrates the story of two young Indian-American, Vibha a 25-year-old college educated young American-Indian woman, and Vinay, a 34-year old management consultant American-Indian man, and the idea of arranged marriage in the Indian culture.

In the article Vibha after much persuasions from her parents agreed to go to India to met his spouse. He met with about thirty men in three weeks where she met Haresh whom she got engaged to after a couple of meeting. The author narrates how Vibha although she proceeded with wedding plans with Haresh keeps having doubt and wanting to put a stop to the marriage. She (Vibha) haven grown up in America like many young Americans believes in the idea of ‘love marriage’ falling in love with someone and then marrying. She was doubtful of the process especially the idea of marrying a stranger, someone she isn’t sure she will love. The author through this stories showed that this is a tradition that dates back centuries and most Indian families that still believe this one of the ways that can preserve their “Indian-ness” especially those living in the United States. It is also worth pointing out that while Vinay, and Vibha’s parents are arranging marriages spouse for them, they still allowed them autonomy and the ability to walk away from a person they are not comfortable with. I believe this is some positive improvement from days when the children didn’t even have a say in the choice of their partners. While most of the parents said it worked for them, and that young adults are often focused on not so important things like appearance when selecting a spouse often necessitating the need for parents to step in, I believe the couple should still be allowed to make this decision though with some
